Hometown Flooded Again

Well Fort Wayne, Indiana is flooded again.

Brings back memories for many up there, I’m sure of this scene in 1982.

Yes that is our 40th president helping sandbag, as so many did. That was the year Fort Wayne garnered the nickname, “The City That Saved Itself”.

Didn’t Your Mother Ever Tell You?

Evidently, mothers in Auburn are neglecting to inform their children that it is not a good idea to ride on top of a moving car:

A bizarre accident has landed a young woman in critical condition at the East Alabama Medical Center. Auburn police say she suffered serious head trauma when she fell off the top of a moving car.

Around 1 a.m. Thursday morning drivers on South College saw something out of the ordinary and called 911. The drivers told dispatchers, a passenger of a car was hanging out of a sun roof while it was moving.

As police officers were being sent out to try and find the car, another 911 call came in reporting the woman had fallen off the car while on Harmon Drive.

Witnesses told police the accident happened when 20-year old Jenny Pastorelli climbed out of the sunroof and sat on top of the moving car. As the vehicle was making a turn onto Pleasant Drive, Pastorelli fell off.

Pastorelli and the driver were the only two people in the car. The name of the driver is not being released. Police have confirmed he’s a 19-year old Auburn College Student. Police say the two were close friends. Police are investigating if alcohol was involved in this accident.

Auburn police say this type of thing is rare, but it does happen. Mostly with people falling out of the back of trucks.

Pastorelli is in critical condition at the hospital. She could be transferred to Columbus or Birmingham.

I see a Darwin Award nomination in this woman’s future.

Tenet Takes One for the Team

Kevin at Wizbang (among others) posts the news,

WASHINGTON (AP) - CIA Director George Tenet acknowledged Friday his agency wrongly allowed President Bush to tell the American people that Iraq was seeking nuclear material from Africa when analysts had doubts about the quality of the intelligence.

“These 16 words should never have been included in the text written for the president,” Tenet said in a statement released after Bush and his national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, blamed the miscue on the CIA and members of Congress called for someone to be held accountable.

“This was a mistake,” the director’s statement said.

Does the administration honestly believe this will end the controversy. Blame Tenet!! People don’t just want someone to blame, someone’s head will need to roll before this controversy dies. Who’s up on the chopping block?

Faith-Based Office in Alabama

This is a developing story that you might want to follow: Governor plans state faith-based initiative office.

I did find a quote of interest

The Alabama executive director for American Atheists, Larry Darby, criticized the program as an attempt by Riley to bolster religion. He said religious groups teaching classes or offering other government services would not be able to resist sharing their faith.

“These groups are sworn to proselytize to seek converts. They can’t help but promote their views when they have a captive audience,” Darby said.

Although I often agree with Mr. Darby, he is wrong on this point. There are many fine faith-based organizations that are able to separate their service delivery from their proselytizing. There is no reason to prohibit these organizations from receiving government assistance as long as they can continue the separation.

The Blame Game

Holly Bailey, writing for Slate’s Today’s Papersgives a succinct analysis of the White House blame game,

While everybody has different versions of what exactly happened, today’s write-ups are a good scorecard on how the blame game will work. The WP’s piece seems to suggest the White House’s plan will be to blame Britain for the screw-up. USAT, meanwhile, blatantly notes “an emerging White House strategy of suggesting that the CIA, which was shown Iraq-related portions of Bush’s speech, could have objected to the uranium charge.” Whether or not the CIA did object depends on which unnamed source you believe today, it seems.
