  • Ten Commandments to Be Displayed in Alabama Capitol

    The Montgomery Advertiser’s website reports,

About 200 supporters of the Ten Commandments marched to the State Capitol this morning to present a granite plaque of the Ten Commandments to Gov. Bob Riley.

Although Riley was not able to receive the plaque, Toby Roth, the governor’s chief of staff, accepted the plaque on Riley’s behalf.

Supporters clapped and cheered after Roth told him that plans are currently in place to display the plaque in the capitol.

Roth said Thursday he expected the plaque to be on display “within the next couple of days.”

The Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, presented the plaque to Roth and suggested that it be placed in the old Supreme Court chambers in the Capitol. The chambers are located in a room directly behind a bust of the late Gov. Lurleen Wallace.

This story is going to be a perfect illustration of Roy Moore’s grandstanding. I have not seen this plaque, but if it is an appropriate size and not placed in the most conspicous place in the Capitol I am not going to have a problem with it.

    Don’t Be Like Alabama

The Montgomery Advertiser editorial page is not ready to give in on Amendment One yet. This time they cite an editorial from Virginia that attempts to illustrate how far anti-tax groups will go.

“Virginians who buy into this thinking ought to take a look at Alabama. Alabama is what you get when you keep taxes low. And, for some people, even Alabama taxes aren’t low enough.”

Watch it, the editorial warns, or you could end up like Alabama.

No one wants to pay high taxes, and if Amendment One raised taxes to high levels we would oppose it. But even it it passed, Alabamians would still be among the least-taxed citizens in the nation.

Having the lowest tax burden in the nation comes at a cost — poor schools, low standards of living and low per capita incomes. Other states recognize the linkage. If Alabama is ever going to catch the rest of the South, Alabamians have to see it as well.

For some reason this is what people just don’t get. They think our ELECTED officials that represent US are going to find a way to mis-spend $1.2 billion. I am not going to argue that Alabama has had some corrupt politicians, but most of them have been in the Governor’s mansion, not the legislature. The Governor has handled the questions of wasteful spending very well. What is a legislator for if not to lobby for needed projects in his district? That’s one of his reasons for being there. If you can’t understand that, than you don’t understand how our system is designed to work.

Great leadership can take this state a long way, but it looks like the naysayers are going to win again and keep Alabama on the bottom.
