Our Honorable Christian Friends

Well, Roy Moore’s supporters are showing us their fine Christian attitudes again,

Judges who will decide the fate of suspended Chief Justice Roy Moore in his ethics case are being swamped with calls and letters from his supporters, some of whom have prompted security worries.

In one letter to a member of the Court of the Judiciary, a writer praised Moore’s stand for the display of the Ten Commandments and quoted the Bible in an apparent warning for his opponents. “Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord,” the letter stated.

The court office in Montgomery has received more than 500 phone calls and hundreds of letters about the case, nearly all from Moore supporters and most from outside Alabama, said court secretary John Wilkerson.

“Most have been courteous. Some have been belligerent. Some have been threatening,” Wilkerson told The Associated Press on Thursday.

WWJD? Evidently, write threatening letters to people who have done absolutely nothing, yet.

Dirty Politics in Montgomery Mayoral Race

Montgomery municipal elections are next Tuesday and a poll released last weekend indicated that the incumbent, Mayor Bobby Bright, was headed for an easy victory, possibly without a run-off. Enter desperation politics! WSFA-TV reports,

How can you tell when a candidate is engaging in election rhetoric or alerting the public to wrongdoing? Case in point: a stunning new charge from mayoral candidate Scott Simmons, just days before the election.

Simmons claims the federal government is investigating the city of Montgomery and how it handled the new riverfront development project. He first made the claim to WSFA’s Chris Holmes Tuesday, then said it again on radio Wednesday morning.

Is it a last minute smear campaign like those launched in the California race?

WSFA’s Chris Holmes met with Simmons Tuesday to shoot a profile story on his candidacy. It was during that interview that Simmons openly claimed as fact the one thing some people have called a rumor for a long time now.

Wherever Simmons campaigns, he makes it clear: he’s not happy about baseball or the Riverfront.

“It was the financial soaking of the people of Montgomery,” Simmons said.

But one charge he’s now campaigning with goes far beyond the usual political discussion.

“You know, there is an FBI probe that’s looking into this exact situation. This investigation is connected to the Healthsouth investigation, which is connected to the Don Siegelman no-bid contract investigation, which is now finding its way to the riverfront,” Simmons claimed.

What is the allegation of wrongdoing they would be investigating?

“I don’t know, it’s not so much the allegation as the same players are involved,” Simmons said.

So he doesn’t even have a real allegation. This is dirty politics of the worst kind. If Simmons is able to force a run-off with this baseless accusation, shame on the citizens of Montgomery.

For what it’s worth, as someone who once lived and now works in Montgomery, I believe Mayor Bright’s efforts merit a second term and he should win without a run-off.

Quicktakes for Thursday

  • Colorado Springs: The NATO defense ministers are meeting here and played out a terrorism scenario yesterday. Yeah War Games!
  • Air Force: The pressure has intensified to examine the cushy lease deal that was entered into with Boeing. It appears that it will cost $5.7 billion more than buying the planes outright. That would merit further investigation in my book.
  • Chicago Cubs: An impressive 12-3 victory over the Marlins puts the Cubs in a comfortable position with Kerry Wood taking the mound tomorrow.
  • Yasser Arafat: What exactly is an “emergency cabinet”?
  • Nobel Prize: USA! USA! USA!
