This morning’s article in the New York Times was the last straw. I sent the following letter to the News Director and General Manager of WSFA, our NBC affiliate in Montgomery, this morning:
Dear Ms. Vickers:
I sent a note to your predecessor last year requesting that James Dobson be removed from the TIA broadcasts. His organization had become involved in the political arena and continuing to air his segment is at least a tacit endorsement by WSFA of his politics. I received a response that I was willing to accept at the time and dropped the request.
I am renewing the request and this time I am not going to drop it. James has become heavily involved in the political arena, as was evidenced during the controversy over the Ten Commanadments monument here in Montgomery, the presidential election and as was further in evidence in this morning’s New York Times.
“James C. Dobson, the nation’s most influential evangelical leader, is threatening to put six potentially vulnerable Democratic senators “in the ‘bull’s-eye’ ” if they block conservative appointments to the Supreme Court. In a letter his aides say is being sent to more than one million of his supporters, Dr. Dobson, the child psychologist and founder of the evangelical organization Focus on the Family, promises “a battle of enormous proportions from sea to shining sea” if President Bush fails to appoint “strict constructionist” jurists or if Democrats filibuster to block conservative nominees.”
It does not matter what he actually says on your broadcast, he has inserted himself in the most obvious manner possible into the political realm and he should not be given a regular platform on a news broadcast. Unless WSFA is prepared to remove Dr. Dobson from its morning broadcast, I will be forced to begin contacting advertisers to request that they pull their support from TIA.
Thank you for your consideration of my request.
If you are as disturbed as I am that James receives a regular platform on the #1 morning news broadcast in Montgomery, you can e-mail the News Director or the General Manager and let them know.

WSFA will never pull the guy… he’s way too popular in Alabama for them to do that. Just consider yourself lucky that Roy Moore and Ashley McKathan don’t also have their own shows.

I’ve already received a response from the GM indicating he would look into the latest political activity by Dobson and get back to me. We’ll see what happens.
