2006 Alabama Governor’s Race: The Role of Strategic Voting

The new poll numbers on a potential Republican primary match-up between current Governor Bob Riley and Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore suggest an interesting scenario. If, as expected, these two candidates do run and Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley and former Governor Don Siegelman square off on the Democratic side it leaves a difficult decision for some Alabama Democrats. Do they vote in the Democratic primary, in what could be a close race, or do they cross over to ensure that Moore does not get past the primary, even with the support of a majority of GOPers? It’s something to consider as we progress through the year and the ‘06 race begins to take shape.

Poll: Roy Moore the Choice of Alabama GOP Voters

As always, Mac Thomason takes the words right out of my mouth. These poll numbers should be shocking to no one. The truly frightening scenario is if Bob Riley decides to not even run for re-election. A clear sailing primary will make it that much easier for Roy to prevail.
