My family first met Nell Rankin in Tripoli, Libya in the early 1950’s when she joined her husband who was stationed at Wheelus AFB at the Base Hospital. My mother was a concert pianist, and the two of them naturally gravitated to each other. Nell became a great friend to us. In September, Nell and my mother staged a concert, with my mother accompanying Nell, under the sponsorship of the Queen of Libya, to raise funds for housing in the country. The concert was performed on the stage of a Roman Ampitheater in the ancient Mediterranean port city of Sabratha, on the coast of Libya. It was only the third time in modern times that any person had appeared on that stage. In 1960, when my family was living in Milan Italy, Nell camt to town to sing the roll of Cassandra in the opera, “I Troiani”. While in Milan, Nell stayed with us, and as a result of that visit, both my father and I had to go outside to smoke. I was greatly saddened to hear of her passing. Nell was both a great artist with that warm wonderful Mezzo soprano voice and a wonderful person. I hold her memory dear and feel fortunate to have been a friend of hers.
