The head of a taskforce looking at prison issues believes the Governor will call a special session on the issue this year. The Governor’s Office seems convinced that special sessions are more efficient than the regular session to conduct the people’s business, and recent evidence would seem to indicate this is the case. However, the first time they call one and something is not accomplished, it will be deemed a giant waste of taxpayer dollars. It’s a fine line to walk. Especially, when you are talking about calling a session just a couple of months before the regular session begins.

Gover Bob Riley is strongly hinting that he will announce his plans for 2006 campaign at a Labor Day barbecue. He has promised the capitol press corps that if they attend they will get a story out of it.

A few thoughts on the top news searches at Hurricane Katrina: It looks like Lousiana and Mississippi are in for the worst, but the storm could still do serious damage in Alabama as well. I hope and wish everyone is preparing appropriately.
- Lindsay Davenport: Another title for Lindsay, heading into the US Open this week.
- Terrell Owens: Who cares?
- Sunni Arab: Sunni Arabs are frustrated with the Iraqi draft constitution. Is anyone surprised?

The tide has turned. A new poll shows a narrow majority of Alabamians who disapprove of the administration’s efforts in Iraq. When the president has lost the support of Alabama, you know the outlook is not good.

Granted this is not the Senator’s area of expertise, but it’s still sad to see a man who isn’t known for following the conservative crowd doing so in this case.

The buzz is that Alabama Governor Bob Riley may announce his intent to run for re-election at an upcoming event to be held on Labor Day. Many of his supporters have been encouraging him to go ahead and get in the game. He has been reluctant, largely to keep the length of the campaign season to a minimum, but the pressure has continued to mount and I expect he will announce he is seeking re-election.

Susan Parker had been looking at the Lieutenant Governor’s race, but with the high level of interest from some other big names, it’s probably a smart move for her to get back into state office through a different path.

My thoughts on the most popular searches at Google News
- Eric Rudolph: I’ll be happy when he leaves the scene. Send him to SuperMax and forget about him. At least his mom loves him.
- Gaza Strip: Move along, nothing to see here.
- Rory Blackhall: Another tragic child death, in Scotland.
- Milan Baros: Big-time soccer player changes teams amid some controversy.
- Jennifer Anniston: Her divorce from Brad what’s his name has been approved, but won’t be final until October 2nd. Count down the days single fellas.

I’m going to resurrect an old feature of this site. Here are some of the top news searches at Google News and some quick thoughts on them.
**Thomas Herrion: A sad tragedy, but not all that unusual, I doubt it had much to do with football.
**CP Ships: A German travel operator has made a $2 billion cash offer for this Canadian container shipping company. Sounds like a sound business deal without much in the way of competition roadblocks.
**Fenway Park: The Stones, Schwarzenegger and nurses, what more do you need?
**Andy Roddick: Lost at the last event before the US Open, not necessarily a bad thing.
**Didier Drogba: The man who scored the lucky goal for Chelsea in their win over Arsenal has his name known all over England today.
**Eli Manning: It looks like his shoulder injury will not keep him out of the NY Giants season opener.

I don’t agree with Jacob Sullum who consistently beats the drum for drug legalization. I do agree with the member of the European Parliament, Chris Davies, he refers to in the piece. It is time to open the debate and it least put the idea on the table for consideration.

I’ve talked about the Discovery Institute before, but it’s nice to see a MSM story on the think tank. Good luck finding anyone with an ounce of credibility who supports “intelligent design” that is not in the Discovery Institute’s pocket.

Senator Jeff Sessions approval rating and the gap between his approval and disapproval ratings puts him near the middle of the pack for US Senators. What should be really worrisome to Sessions is that he less popular in Alabama than “Gang of 14″ members Lindsey Graham and Lincoln Chafee are in their home states. I have a feeling his CAFTA vote may have had something to do with his numbers shifting recently.

Alabama’s latest unemployment numbers show that the idea that immigrants are taking jobs from Americans who are willing to work is simply false. The number of immigrants in the state continues to climb and the unemployment rate continues to decline. Of course, you’d never know by listening to the idiotic radio hosts in this state (yes Russ n’ Dee, I’m talking about you AGAIN).
