I haven’t written on the bond issue that is the talk of Prattville. I am fully in support of the $48 million bond the city wants in order to make a number of improvements needed to recruit retail and other interests to the city. Our city leaders are right, this is the way the game is played folks. It always makes people nervous when you start throwing around big numbers, but it is an investment in the future of the city. The public hearing is scheduled for 4pm tomorrow, so if you’re interested in the issue, I encourage you to show up and make your voice heard, but do your research and talk to folks who know what they’re talking about.

I’m not shocked that three quarters of Alabamians say they support the Governor’s call for a boycott of Aruba. But you cannot tell me that seven out of ten Alabamians would turn down a free trip to the country if it was offered. That’s just a lie! Now, about half of Alabamians have never left the state, so I can obviously buy that, but there’s definitely about twenty percent who are lying.

Instead of working on real ideas on immigration policy, Alabama has a Senator who wants to build a fence. The cost to fence off our border with Mexico could range anywhere from $4 to 8 billion and it won’t stop people from wanting to come to the United States. So how is this not throwing money down the toilet?

All of Prattville is in mourning this morning, after a devastating loss by the 6A #1 Lions to the Opelika Bulldogs last night. This really looked like it would be Prattville’s season to take the title, but we always have next year.

This case has been a concern of mine from the day it happened. I don’t feel like the full facts of the incident have ever been on public display. Due to the nature of the incident, I certainly believe Officer Walker’s widow has a strong case. It will dredge up bad feelings, as the Mayor indicates, but I don’t feel like the city has ever gotten full closure in this case and maybe a civil suit is what is needed for that to happen.

State Rep. Jack Venable (D-Tallassee) has lost his long battle with leukemia. My thoughts and condolences go out to his family. He was a good man who will be missed in the Alabama legislature.

Political consultant Michael Scanlon once worked on the staff of Alabama Governor Bob Riley, when he worked in the US House of Representatives. Of course, the Governor would be smart to avoid talking about their association and it doesn’t have much bearing on events today, but he did once hire the man.

Having spent a good deal of time in the last year in rural Alabama, I would agree with Speaker Hammett and Senate President Pro Tem Lowell Barron. It is time toput a real focus on rural Alabama, not just parts of some initiatives in some areas of policy, but one center that brings it all together. The needs are great in these areas and they are without a doubt being left behind.

Candidate for Alabama lieutenant governor, George Wallace Jr. is lining up big names to raise some money for his campaign. Senator John McCain will visit on Monday, but he has also lined up appearances by former Sen. Fred Thompson, Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. Not too shabby.

Oops! Governor Riley’s appointee to fill the Mobile County Commission slot left open by Sam Jones when he became Mayor of Mobile was once suspended from the Mobile Police Department due to a bribery charge. He was not found to be guilty of the charge, but he didn’t disclose the fact that he was suspended to the governor prior to the press reporting it to the public.

Judge Sue Bell Cobb certainly has the credentials to be Chief Justice. She will certainly test the theory that no Democrat can win a seat on the Supreme Court, much less the Chief Justice slot, in the age of Roy Moore.

Mac points to a poll of Republican state legislators by the Decatur Daily. It’s pretty bad when Roy can only manage two votes and neither of those folks will go on the record as supporting him. Is that really support?

Governor Riley wants the Alabama legislature to focus on prison reform for the first two weeks of the regular session that begins January 10th. There are a number of outstanding recommendations that need to be implemented immediately, but getting them past some legislators is going to be extremely challenging.
