Talk About Reactionary   Comments

It doesn’t get much more knee-jerk than this:

Minnesota has fired football coach Glen Mason and will announce it later Sunday, several sources said.

Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi has called a news conference for 6 p.m. ET Sunday “regarding the future of the Golden Gopher football program.”

Minnesota (6-7) lost to Texas Tech in the Insight Bowl after allowing the Red Raiders to overcome a 31-point, third-quarter deficit for a stunning 44-41 OT win on Friday night. It was the largest comeback in Division I-A bowl history.

GOP to Gain Power in Alabama Senate   Comments

Lowell Barron will not be the majority leader in the state senate next session. It appears a bi-partisan coalition of senators, the majority of which are Republican, but led by a Democrat, will take control in January. This is the biggest shift in Alabama legislative politics in many years. The coalition is expected to be able to bring much of Governor Riley’s agenda to the floor, which in the past was stymied by Barron and his cronies. This should make for a very interesting legislative session, but they almost always are.

**UPDATE: I’m surprised we haven’t heard from Jeff Vreeland on this one yet. He didn’t think the bi-partisan coalition stood much of a chance.

Governor Pleads for Plan   Comments

Governor Riley pleaded with legislators yesterday not to kill his 2010 Plan before it gets started. So much of what he wants to do depends on getting his proposals out of committee, and he has little confidence that will happen.

Hanging the success or failure of anything on action by the Alabama Legislature is suicide.
