Alabamians Surpass Most Americans in Some Biblical Knowledge   Comments

Most Americans don’t know the books of the Bible that compose the canonical gospels, but most Alabamians do. Finally something Alabamians know that most Americans don’t…

Delusional   Comments

The Alabama Legislature is just plain delusional if they think overriding the Governor’s veto to give themselves a pay raise will have no impact on the next election. All we can do is bide our time and let them know at the polls next time around. I’m truly disappointed in folks like Mac Gipson, who know better. A raise is one thing, but this raise is excessive.

What a Bunch of Hooey   Comments

As a state employee I can say with confidence, what a bunch of hooey! The transition from bi-weekly to semi-monthly pay cycles certainly was a pain, but we got through it, now the legislature wants to change it back? Make up your minds!

Employees salaries didn’t change, only how it was divided, just because people aren’t responsible enough to manage their finances is not a cause for the legislature to intervene. Here is an example of a “problem” under the new system:

Wren said state employees have sent e-mails describing problems such as the inability to use a biweekly bank draft to pay their mortgage under the new system.

Are you kidding me? Yes, the payday changes from time to time, but its never later than the 3rd or the 18th of the month, so make your bank draft after the 3rd or after the 18th. The fact that a state representative would spend his time on this kind of stupidity is a prime example of why Alabama is where it is today.

Oh and by the way, those 2300 e-mails were carefully orchestrated. I got the e-mail requesting me to contact Rep. Wren. I’m sure it went out to every one of the tens of thousands of state employees, getting a small percentage to e-mail the representative is not a huge accomplishment.

Purdue vs. Florida - Are you kidding me?   Comments

49-49 with a little over six minutes to go, are you kidding me?

UPDATE:
- Florida scores 5 points in the following 30 seconds…
- Teague hits a 3 to keep Purdue in it

Having watched Purdue play all year, I’ll state the obvious…best performance I’ve seen from them in 5 years.

Now that’s Gall…   Comments

Alright, it takes gall to spend public dollars on beer, but to then contend you did nothing wrong takes serious cojones.

Boilermakers Steam Into Second Round With 72-63 Win Over Arizona   Comments

Congratulations to the Purdue Boilermakers on advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Their reward, facing the #1 seed in the tournament, and defending NCAA Champion Florida. Everyone wants to have the chance to slay Goliath and the Boilermakers get their shot.

The ladies are up later today.

Then You’re Not Stopping…   Comments

I commend the organizers of this march for wanting to do something to improve their community, but when this is the rhetoric that is spouted:

“We’re not going to stop until all drugs and contraband in the community are gone,” said Harrison, who worked for weeks organizing the march and rally because of several recent shootings.

I’m a big believer in communities coming together to make lives better, but this is not the way to start the dialogue. The reasons for having the drugs and contraband run deep and the solutions must run just as deep.

Poll: Bush’s Support for the War Continues to Decline, Even in Alabama   Comments

When the President loses Alabama, all is lost.

In April 2003, for example, 78 percent believed that Bush had done the right thing by using military force, according to a Press-Register/USA survey. A few months later, another poll found that 64 percent believed that the war had been worth the cost. Last week, 41 percent held that opinion.

Congratulations Boilermakers!   Comments

Congratulations to the Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball team for grabbing a #9 seed in this year’s NCAA tournament. I especially commend the selection committee for once again placing the Boilermakers in the closest site to me, in this case New Orleans. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it yet, but I appreciate the committee’s effort on my behalf.

The Days of PAC-to-PAC transfers may finally be over   Comments

The AP indicates, overwhelming support among legislators for banning PAC-to-PAC transfers. The time is long overdue and I hope legislators do the right thing in passing this legislation.

Clinton and Obama Cross Paths in Selma, Alabama   Comments

The national political spotlight shifted to Selma, Alabama yesterday, as Barack Obama and Hillary (as well as Bill) Clinton made appearances within blocks of each other. Alabama hasn’t had this kind of spotlight on it politically for some time. Obama fired up a standing room only crowd at Brown Chapel AME Church, with several hundred standing outside to listen. Hillary spoke at First Baptist, with only a few gathered around a TV set outside.

It will not be the last visit to Alabama for either candidate, as we have moved our primary to become a player in the presidential race. It is exciting for any Alabamian who follows politics.

Congratulatons and Good Luck to the Lady Boilers   Comments

The Purdue women’s basketball team will go for their sixth Big Ten tournament title tomorrow night in Indianapolis. They took care of business and will likely face the #1 seed Ohio State in the final. I’m looking forward to cheering them on…GO BOILERS!

It’ll Never Happen in Montgomery   Comments

I applaud city leaders for bringing John Tyson to explain the program he started in Mobile. Though it is desperately needed, and the right thing to do, our leaders will never make the commitment to prevention that needs to be made. The reality is the children and adolescents who are served by the criminal justice system are known entities long before they commit serious crimes. Intervening early with appropriate services is the key to reducing the burden placed on the system in the future. But no one around here is forward thinking enough to make that happen.

This is Why…   Comments

…the media needs to do its job and bring these things to light. “Business as usual” in Alabama does not equal “legal”.

Because It’s a Mess   Comments

Alabama’s two year college system is in crisis. I’m not sure they will find anyone to take it over giving that person the authority to do the thorough house cleaning that is needed. It is one of the biggest centers of corruption and graft in the state and needs to be thoroughly reviewed.
