National Take on Alabama’s 2nd   Comments

The Washington Post Blog has a nice national perspective on the race in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District. The one piece of new information is that Rep. Artur Davis has spoken to Mayor Bright about the seat, which wouldn’t seem to be a major piece of news except that Rep. Davis heads up the recruitment efforts for the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee).

Prostitute TV in Birmingham?   Comments

Birmingham may give us a new form of reality TV if it starts broadcasting pictures of the “Prostitutes of Birmingham and Their Johns”.

Mayor Bernard Kincaid called the proposal “Orwellian.”

“It’s `1984′-ish. It smacks of that,” he said. “It just seems to me there are other ways” to address prostitution.

Oh come now Mayor Kincaid…haven’t we moved so far into 1984 territory already that this is just the logical next step?

City of Montgomery Stakes Claim to Chantilly Parkway   Comments

The battle over the businesses on the Chantilly Parkway and their tax revenue continued yesterday with action from the Montgomery City Council.

Council members voted 7-0 Tuesday to annex a tract of land owned by Trum LLC into Montgomery at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Council members Tim Head, District 2, and Willie Cook, District 6, were absent from the meeting.

It engulfed land surrounding the home improvement superstore into the city of Montgomery after weeks of political posturing that countered a previous move by Pike Road.

The Pike Road Town Council voted 5-0 to annex Ryan Road and the nearby Home Depot store Aug. 21. Alabama law requires that annexed property must lie next to the municipality it joins but the annexation moves by the Montgomery City Council cast doubt on the Ryan Road annexation because it is no longer contiguous to Pike Road.

All the businesses along Chantilly Parkway eventually will pay business fees to the city of Montgomery, Council President Charles Jinright said. “It’s just a possible income to the city if it’s in the city limits.”

That will be news to Mayor Gordon Stone of Pike Road who continues to state firmly that the Home Depot is in Pike Road. We’re just getting to the good stuff now.
