Political Motivations Everywhere You Look
I hope the Siegelman supporters understand that their drive to prove the prosecution of Don Siegelman was politically motivated are just as politically motivated in their efforts. There are certainly going to be efforts to chip away at Jill Simpson’s credibility, as there is in this morning’s Birmingham News.
A Republican lawyer who earlier said she wrote her own sworn statement suggesting White House influence in former Gov. Don Siegelman’s prosecution testified last month that she received help from Siegelman supporters, and helped provide research for defense lawyers.
Jill Simpson of Rainsville also told congressional staff that she spoke at different times over several months with Siegelman, his supporters and Gov. Bob Riley’s political opponents before deciding to write the May 21 affidavit used to promote a U.S. House Judiciary Committee hearing on the prosecution of Siegelman and his co-defendant, former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy. Both are now serving prison terms.
Simpson’s interaction behind the scenes with those she identified in her testimony suggest she’s part of a political assault rather than a whistle-blower, said Rob Riley, son of Gov. Bob Riley, who is referenced repeatedly in Simpson’s testimony.
