Meth spikes Foster Care Rolls in Alabama   Comments

Crystal meth has had a major impact in Alabama and we’re only now beginning to recognize it. It’s only a small piece of the impact alcohol and drug abuse has, but it’s a growing part.

Gen. Sanchez Blasts Bush Administration   Comments

I agree with Dr. Taylor…it is going to be interesting to watch how the war supporters respond to Gen. Sanchez’s indictment of their strategy. Weren’t these same folks saying they were listening to “top military leaders”…does anyone really believe that bunk anymore?

Chicken or the Egg? Get Rid of Race Classification to Get Rid of Racism?   Comments

A local activist is arguing that it’s time for Alabama to stop listing race on our driver’s licenses (he claims we are the last state with this practice) and other state documents, so we can start to eliminate racism. Other civil rights advocates say we will have a more difficult tiime knowing racism is occurring without the information on race.

I do know there are some documents that must include race because of federal law, but I think the debate of when this is appropriate and when it isn’t is an interesting one. I don’t think eliminating race from these documents decreases racism, but does it hurt our ability to ferret it out?

News Continues to Pursue Other Side of Simpson’s Tale   Comments

The Birmingham News continues to pursue the “other side” of Jill Simpson’s testimony this morning. If Don Siegelman accepted a deal to concede the election to have the federal prosecution against him stopped, he didn’t tell his attorneys about it (though one of them has now passed away, so we’ll never know). It’s an important point to raise, though my Siegelman supporter friends will continue to contend this is just an effort by the News to undermine the investigation, I believe it’s just good reporting (and no one is going to call me a Republican).
