A local activist is arguing that it’s time for Alabama to stop listing race on our driver’s licenses (he claims we are the last state with this practice) and other state documents, so we can start to eliminate racism. Other civil rights advocates say we will have a more difficult tiime knowing racism is occurring without the information on race.

I do know there are some documents that must include race because of federal law, but I think the debate of when this is appropriate and when it isn’t is an interesting one. I don’t think eliminating race from these documents decreases racism, but does it hurt our ability to ferret it out?
