State transportation officials say they are ready to start pilot programs in Birmingham and Montgomery to determine whether cell phones can give accurate travel times to display on message boards.

The system will be tested along Interstate 65 from U.S. 31 in Alabaster to 41st Street in Birmingham and in I-65 construction zones in Montgomery.

During the pilot program, the travel times will be posted on message boards for motorists to see.
