Yasmin Elhady of Huntsville found out that being a rational human being is sometimes not valued by a segment of the American population. The people who have made threats against Ms. Elhady because of her question about the need to repair America’s image in the Muslim world are terrorists of a different sort.
America is great because we can have dialogue, not because we all believe whatever policy has been implemented by our government is correct. When anyone attempts to squelch that dialogue, they are squelching what made this country the envy of the world for many decades.
“The beautiful thing about America is that you and I disagree but we respect each other. You and I can share our thoughts with each other and not have to be hateful toward one another. That’s why we’re the greatest nation on Earth,” she said.
But some of that respect was missing from the online conversation Wednesday night and Thursday morning. She was personally threatened, insulted and maligned and her entire religion was blamed for the violence of a few.
“I know that’s not the America I love and defend all the time and speak about when I’m in the Middle East,” she said.

A study has found that college students at the University of Texas drink more during football games involving their institution than they do during New Year’s Eve or the last day of classes.
But it does confirm that law enforcement, and the general public, need to be more vigilant on gamedays and especially on big gamedays.

Brian at Flashpoint thinks Jeffrey Toobin is an idiot for mocking Mike Huckabee’s stance on the elimination of the Internal Revenue Service. Believers in the Flat Tax think that it will eliminate all of the bureaucracy. Unfortunately, in this day and age, no matter what the tax structure is, you are still going to need people to monitor and enforce the law and that is what the IRS is. No matter what tax structure you favor, there will still be a need for the IRS.

I think it is good that a court may finally decide whether or not the Governor has the authority to appoint replacement county commissioners, because it does seem to fly in the face of the Voting Rights Act provisions that have been in place for decades.

Rep. Artur Davis continues to indicate strongly that he would like to run for governor in 2010, if the situation is right. I thought his words yesterday were quite interesting.
“Polling suggests that the race is winnable, but the keys will be whether I can raise the money for a successful campaign and whether I believe the state is ready for the type of race I would run,” he said.
Davis said the latter didn’t concern whether he thought Alabama was ready for a black governor, but whether they were ready for the types of issues he would want to pursue.
These issues include campaign finance reform and more transparent government, finding a way to help convert the state’s economic reform to social reform, and looking at a new state constitution so that communities with pressing local needs could try to solve them without having to come to Montgomery to fix a problem that Montgomery doesn’t know anything about.
I strongly support a Davis run for governor and these issues are exactly the ones on which he should be campaigning. Whether Alabamians are ready or not, I hope he runs.

There is no doubt the Alabama Medicaid system is in crisis and I applaud their efforts to bring attention to that issue by involving legislators. Rep. Artur Davis was the only congressman to take up the baton, but I think it’s an issue where he can make a difference and gain some additional exposure on a statewide basis.
“As you shop at the mall, a lot of the people waiting on you will be on Medicaid,” he said. “When you go through the drive-through on your way home, the people serving you may be on Medicaid.”
A large number of those needing Medicaid assistance are “the working poor,” children and elderly residents, he said.
“This wasn’t caused by a governor or by a legislature,” said Davis. “It was caused by a generation of governors and legislatures. Pointing fingers and trying to blame this on someone is unproductive. The individuals who need our help don’t care whether it is a Democrat or a Republican who solves this problem, just that it is solved.”
Like most of our problems…and a solutions-oriented person is what this state desperately needs.

Rep. Artur Davis should get much praise for getting involved in the looming Alabama Medicaid crisis, which as he says, affects many other states and is an issue Congress needs to look at. Medicaid is such an important program, that we can’t afford to let healthcare services for the poor suffer in the ways it seems it will without intervention.

The New South Coalition in Alabama will give its presidential primary endorsement this weekend, and the race is wide open. The way Barack Obama’s candidacy has played out here has been extremely interesting, with many prominent African-Americans in the state openly stating they don’t believe Obama has a chance to win because of his race. It isn’t sad that they are supporting other candidates, but it is truly saddening if that is the only reason.

No doubt about it…but there are two issues going on here. One is that the vast majority of crime is tied to drug abuse, yes. The other is that we have made being addicted a criminal offense instead of a disease that needs to be treated.
We need to address the problem on parallel tracks, prevention and treatment. We need to work harder and invest more in preventing drug and underage alcohol use before it starts. We also need better resources for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol to get help before they commit other crimes and even when the commit other crimes.

I’m glad to see the prescription drug problem getting some mainstream media attention in Alabama. This is a serious issue that people need to begin to wake up and pay attention to. Prescription drugs are easy to become addicted to and they are causing a rapid growth in the number of our elderly citizens who are addicted, in addition to other populations.

The Mobile Register has an excellent story this morning on another of those little known rules that helps schools bypass the No Child Left Behind Act. They get “partial credit” for students in certain special populations who come close to meeting standards. The effect is that many schools who would not otherwise meet standards are magically doing so.
Now, I’m not a fan of NCLB, but for those who think it works, this is food for thought…

Shockingly, my Representative, Mike Rogers made me proud last night in voting to override President Bush’s veto of the Labor-HHS-Education spending bill. As Mary Orndorff points out, he had a few earmarks in there, but regardless of what motivated him, it is one of the few opportunities I have had to say thank you to Rep. Rogers.

I am very sorry to hear that State Rep. Mac Gipson (R-Prattville) is retiring from the Alabama House. He was one of the leading voices for children’s issues and I was proud to have him represent me during the time I lived in Prattville. He is a good man and the kind of Republican I might not always agree with, but I do respect.

I stand with the American Cancer Society in Alabama on calling for Alabama to pass a more comprehensive workplace ban on smoking. We are once again behind the times and behind the rest of the country and it’s time we caught up. Alabamians die every day from secondhand smoke and it can be prevented.
