Idiot State Senator Proposes Another Dumb Law
My first inclination was not to give any additional attention to State Senator Scott Beason’s proposed English-only driver’s test bill, but after reading a little further into the article, I found we would not be the only state to have such a policy (a rarity for us).
Melissa Savage, a policy analyst with the National Conference of State Legislatures, said 45 states use multiple languages, although in some border and Western states the languages are just English and Spanish. Five states - New Hampshire, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming and Maine - are English only, she said.
Although, I would imagine, we would be the first to have it ingrained in our state constitution, though I am open to being wrong on that. I was surprised to learn that we are more open in the number of languages we offer for our driving test than many states, and I think it should stay that way.
English is not the only language our citizens use, and it shouldn’t be a requirement to drive.
