I have remained silent for too long on the presidential race. As any regular reader knows, I am not someone who is shy about giving his opinion. I will admit this presidential cycle has been a struggle for me, but on the eve of the Iowa caucuses, I am ready to stake my flag for Barack Obama. I do believe he is the right man at the right time.
America is not a dynastic nation and I cannot live with the thought of continuing a tradition that has existed for my entire lifetime. For all but the earliest years of my life, there has been a Bush or a Clinton in the oval office or the vice presidency…28 years. I cannot support seeing that continue. It’s time for others to have a chance. I certainly believe Hillary is a capable leader, but she is the wrong person for this time.
I believe in the two Americas espoused by John Edwards, but I believe he is the wrong person to bridge that divide. I certainly hope that an Obama administration would find an appropriate position for him, as well as other presidential candidates like Sen. Joseph Biden (the Democrats sharpest mind and most experienced leader on foreign policy) and Gov. Bill Richardson.
Senator Barack Obama is the right man because he believes in the power of ordinary Americans, and he will lay out a domestic and foreign policy that supports the ability of all Americans to be who they want to be. He is not about knowing what is best, he is about giving everyone the opportunity to be their best.
I strongly urge the people of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, and my great State of Alabama that if you have not yet decided who you will support, to give Senator Obama the benefit of the doubt. Democrats will retake the White House this year, that is not the question. The only question is who we want in the Oval Office when it happens.
