Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright had said he would announce his intentions regarding Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District seat, being vacated by Terry Everett, after the first of the year. He appears to still be deciding and has made no announcement yet.

Everyone expects him to run, but the official announcement is what will set the dominoes in motion for the shape of the rest of the candidate field.

On the Democratic side, no candidates had filed with the FEC, although party officials in Washington and in Alabama insist they will make a strong run at picking up the seat. They are increasingly optimistic that Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright will run as a Democrat.

Democratic officials say the national party is committed to investing in the race under the right circumstances.

“If Bobby Bright is the Democratic candidate, this seat becomes a pickup opportunity, given his record of success,” said Kyra Jennings, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “We are invested in growing our majority and have the resources to do it.”
