Dungy will step down; Caldwell will be named Indy coach

It is now being reported that Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy will step down and Jim Caldwell will be named the new coach. Most people believed this is where we were headed, but I still hate to seem him go.

Another Alabama Budget Disaster

Nothing good about this news…

Projections show Alabama legislators will have more than $500 million less to spend on education in the next fiscal year than is being spent in the current year.

The projections also show there will be about $230 million million less for non-education state services, such as state troopers and prisons.

That was the bleak economic picture painted Wednesday for lawmakers by the director of the Legislative Fiscal Office, Joyce Bigbee, as the Legislature began budget hearings leading up to the Feb. 5 beginning of the 2008 regular session.

Bigbee also told lawmakers that the state will have to withdraw almost $406 million from a savings account to pay all of the bills for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

Yes, you heard that right, we have to dip into $406 million of reserves just to meet the budget that was set for the current fiscal year…more fun times on Goat Hill.

More of “Them”

What is it with the use of “them” this morning…now it’s the governor…

Gov. Bob Riley is the chairman of a new fundraising campaign that he says will be the vehicle for Republicans to capture control of the state Legislature in 2010 if the party is able to raise $7 million.

“If we do that, mark it down,” Riley told a group of Press-Register reporters and editors this week. “We’re going to take them.”

And what happens then governor? What happens when the Republicans take control of the legislature? How will it be different than it is now?

Cancel the MLK Holiday?

The whole tone of this post bothers me…especially the conclusion…

Cancel the “3rd Monday MLK Day” farce and get to work instead. Help the intelligent, able, and ambitious black community–one in four Alabamians–achieve the greatness I know they’re capable of.

Calling anyone “them” bothers me. We are all in need of the goals Dr. King had for the country, not any one particular segment of us. And, no, I am not in favor of canceling the MLK holiday. It’s important, and deserves to be set aside on the calendar.

Attorney General King stumps Alabama for McCain

I almost never give credit to AG Troy “the boy” King for anything, but I’ll give him credit for sticking with his presidential candidate, even in the darkest days.

King made campaign stops Tuesday in Huntsville and Birmingham. He planned appearances Wednesday in Dothan, Mobile and Montgomery.

Asked why voters should support McCain over other Republicans, King said he had nothing critical to say about the other candidates.

“For me, John McCain is the right man because he’s battle tested, and we don’t have to worry about whether there will be a learning curve,” the attorney general said.

Many other McCain supporters in Alabama jumped ship for Fred Thompson, and will likely end up regretting that decision.
