Who Will Be Montgomery’s Next Mayor?

The Advertiser does an admirable job of handicapping the race to succeed Mayor Bright. They also solicit the opinion of Dr. Moody that race will play a role in a city that is now almost 50% African-American. I think it’s quite likely that Montgomery may see it’s first black mayor this time around, if one candidate can emerge. Scott Simmons will run again and will get a large percentage of the vote. Police Chief Art Baylor and current assistant to the Mayor, Michael Bridell have the best chance at defeating Simmons one-on-one, but the problem is, but in order to do that they will have to get into a run-off.

I have my doubts about how much of the vote Scott Simmons can gain if (when) he runs again. The biggest backers he has had in the past have gotten off the Scott Simmons train. They no longer see it as a lucrative investment. To make matters worse, he did not receive more votes the second time he ran, he received fewer.
Michael Bridell has a fantastic opportunity to make this race his, if he comes out soon in the running.
I still think Art Baylor is too “new” to the scene to garner much of the vote. It all depends on campaign tactics at this point. Unless he can show his time as Chief of Police as being incredibly productive, citizens may not wish to give him a promotion.

Art Baylor will get a fair portion of the white vote–including folks who supported Emory Folmar and Scott Simmons in the past.
