Davis: “If You Don’t Run, You’re Guaranteed to Lose”

Rep. Artur Davis continues to get attention for a possible run for the Alabama governor’s office in 2010. I have seen a lot of chatter online that he has no shot, but there really is only one answer for that…

The decidedly unfavorable odds have some questioning whether Davis can reach the milestone he seeks. “Race is still too big a factor in certain Southern states. Alabama is one of those states,” said David Bositis, a senior research associate for national black electoral politics at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington, D.C.

Bositis noted that all of the black state legislators in Alabama represent black-majority districts, “As opposed to, for example, North Carolina, where most of the black state legislators in North Carolina actually represent non-black majority districts.”

But Davis would think himself a hypocrite if he didn’t give it a shot. “If you don’t run, you are guaranteed to lose,” he said in an interview with CQ Politics. “And if you don’t run, you defeat yourself.”

Is it a steeper uphill climb for an African-American to become President of the United States or Governor of Alabama? Certainly the latter, but the achievement of the first brings us that much closer to achieving the second.

I agree that it will be a challenge for Artur Davis to win the race for Governor but he has overcome difficult odds before.

  • A relative and I were talking today about the recent presidential race. We were both somewhat ashamed because a year ago we both felt (and said) that we didn’t think the country was ready to elect either a woman or a black man. America proved us wrong. Maybe Alabama is ready to prove the doubters wrong as well.

  • Race will probably help him in his race for the nomination, the reality that it could be a double-edged sword just comes with the territory.
