I have to admit that this controversy challenges me. The Azalea Trail Maids are certainly a group that harkens back to an earlier time, that was not a good time for many. However, the group today is multicultural and represent the young women of Mobile well. I strongly disagree with the suggestion by some that a marching band from one of the historically black colleges would have been a better set of representatives for the state. I don’t think we should select the inaugural representatives based on the race of the new president. I think it was a good idea to select a group that crosses the spectrum, but the image the Azalea Trail Maids will present in their antebellum costumes will be an odd image for that day.
In summary, I think we could have presented a better picture of the current state of Alabama, but these young ladies should not be denigrated for being a part of something positive in their community.

A very well reasoned opinion, Kristopher. It isn’t like they are an all white group. There are FAR bigger problems in this country for people to worry about.
