It is long past time to take action on healthcare in this country. A system that allows a third of the citizens of Alabama to be without healthcare coverage for any period of time is broken. We need a better solution and we need it now.
An estimated 1.2 million people in Alabama, about a third of the population, lacked health insurance at some point in either 2007 or 2008, according to a report released Tuesday.
The report, from the health advocacy group Families USA, noted that almost three-fourths of the uninsured in Alabama were from working families, and most of the others were seeking jobs or were disabled. The organization counted only people younger than 65 over a two-year period in an effort to better gauge the problem.
The reason this study is so important is that the figures many people use for the uninsured are the ones issued by the Census Bureau, but the Census Bureau only counts those who are uninsured at one given point in the year. These new figures give a much more accurate picture of the situation.
We do not have the luxury to stand around and wait any longer. This is a problem that is only going to get worse and only cost we the citizens more down the road. The Obama administration understands how big this problem is and wants to address it head on. The Congress is gun shy…because of fear. We need to overcome the fear to address the problem.
