AL State Senate Race Offers Yet Another Lesson in Importance of Twitter

I have been blowing the horn to political candidates and campaigns all over this state, that if you aren’t engaged in social media, you are going to pay a price. There have been several case studies over the last few months proving the point, and the latest happened today in the State Senate District 7 race.

Many people first heard about the fake press release and fliers that were being circulated in Huntsville this afternoon, after the Secretary of State office issued a press release emphasizing that, in fact, the election would NOT be extended an extra day as the flier claimed (released just before 3pm this afternoon). However, anyone on Twitter would have known not only that this was out there, but who the source was first thing this morning.

I’ve been hitting a brick wall in trying to help campaigns understand what they’re missing by not engaging their supporters (and keeping an eye on those who oppose them), but no one seems to want to listen. Maybe someone will start listening now!

  • Kris, right on brother.

New media strategy is emerging as a must have for political campaigning. Also, like you mention, it is the face of being an informed citizen, which I liken to being a duty.

  • Yeah try telling some of the so-called political media consultants out there…even the so-called “new media” consultants don’t get what has happened in the last few months.

  • Well, we can’t view Alabama as a barometer of the rest of the country acknowledging the emergence of the medium. I know in my dealings with a few of the candidates I am working with, they understand and embrace the idea. What it will take is some education. Republicans especially should learn from Obama’s campaign on how successful new media is to winning. Although, perhaps a tactic, Obama’s advisors are saying this was not the top key to their victory.

  • This isn’t about Obama…it’s about what is driving the debate TODAY. The problem on the Democratic side is that folks believe that if you just duplicate what Obama did, you’re in good shape. The problem is(a) nobody in Alabama has the resources to duplicate what he did and (b) even if you did, you’d be behind the times, Twitter is where the online world is moving and if you don’t have an ACTIVE presence, you could be in serious trouble.

A few points to keep in mind. A lot of folks in Alabama are on dial up lines so their time on line is limited, cell phone service is spotty off the interstate corridor so net books/iphones don’t work too well.

So twitter (which I find as useful as IRC and IM) has to be seen as part of a total effort, which includes shoe leather, walking around money, fax blasting, phone banking, print/TV/radio, email, web, etc.

Wonder when candidates will start offering web based games as part of the effort?

  • Walt,

Agreed. My point with Twitter has been that it makes you AWARE of what’s going on well before other mediums, not that it can be your entire strategy for winning election. It’s not that the medium itself will make or break a campaign, it’s the timeliness of the information you can get from Twitter, when you’re connected to the right outlets could make the difference.

I agree that shoe leather is important and money is important, but I think candidates need to start getting a lot smarter about how they spend their advertising dollars. Print advertising is changing…TV advertising is changing…radio advertising is changing…even web advertising is changing. You can’t duplicate what’s been done in the past and say you’re running a good campaign.
