After weeks of silence from the camp of Alabama Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb, we finally started to hear the chatter crank back up today. Danny reported this morning that Sue Bell Cobb has told her staff she is leaving to pursue other opportunities and they are starting to look for other employment. Also, AP reporter Phillip Rawls played up the connection between Cobb and latest Artur Davis supporter Jere Beasley. Danny drew the connection that Beasley’s commitment to chair Davis’s campaign may have been the last straw for Cobb.
If it’s true that she told her staff this week of her departure, I would give it two to three weeks before there is an official announcement. Perhaps right after the July 4th holiday, but it certainly appears as if we will have a three-way race between Davis, Cobb and Sparks on the Democratic side, while there are that many horses and more on the Republican side. Strap on your helmets people, it’s going to be one heck of a ride!

Thanks for the link to the story. It never has made much sense to me that Cobb would run, so I have always assumed she wouldn’t, but who knows. She is playing her cards awfully close to the vest.
If I may clarify, I don’t know if she told her staff she was leaving. I know with certainty that some of her staff are looking for other jobs, and I know that there are others (not staff) who have been led to believe, who are convinced, that staff members are looking for jobs because Cobb is leaving.
It’s all very interesting. Where is Sparks in all this?
It has always felt so improbable to me that she would run, that even when the signs point to her running, I would not be surprised if she passed.

Sparks is really floundering…I’m not sure that his base of support his wide enough to withstand the wave of high profile supporters who will line up behind Davis. Beasley is just one of many.
However, I also have no doubt that Paul Hubbert and some others are putting A LOT of pressure on Sue Bell Cobb to run and that it’s being presented as a “once in a lifetime” offer of support. I still don’t see the logic in running, but if she truly has the AEA’s money and ground game behind her, I wouldn’t bet against her.

Before she thinks about running. This could be a problem for her. People need to get paid for work they have done.
