State Senate Candidate Warns Candidates Not to Ignore the Web

I keep saying it and saying it and saying it, and almost no candidate seems to really be paying attention. Rep. Cam Ward, who is now running for Alabama State Senate gets it, and has gotten it for sometime. He doesn’t make the strongest argument as to WHY it’s important, but he does get that it is.

It goes much deeper than just a way to reach your voters and constituents, it is the key to a strong rapid response unit as well. Stories can take hold very quickly online and mushroom into big stories in other media outlets as well. If you aren’t in tune with what’s going on on the web, you are in danger of being blind-sided by a story that has become much bigger than you really understand.

And it isn’t just young people that are tied in to these social networks, the biggest growth in Facebook users is in those over 30 (in fact, the latest numbers show those 18-25 leaving Facebook in bigger numbers than they are joining). Having a website isn’t even a beginning for a candidate anymore. Retail politics are still important, but what happens after that face-to-face contact is just as important as the contact itself.

We’ve seen some candidates make some attempts at connecting with the online community, but I have yet to see evidence that any candidate other than Cam Ward really gets the potential of what these web outlets can do for a campaign, and it costs you nothing but time and energy.
