“I have stood on the line in Everett, Wash., where we have thousands of workers who go to work every day to build these planes,” Murray says. “I would challenge anybody to tell me that they’ve stood on a line in Alabama and seen anybody building anything.”
I had reserved judgement on this quote from Senator Patty Murray (D-Washington) because I deeply respect her and what she has stood for in representing her state, but I believe she does owe Alabamians an apology. I have been able to confirm that the quote in the NPR story that has caused such a firestorm of response from the Governor, Lt. Governor, Senator Richard Shelby (R) and Rep. Bobby Bright (D), among others, is both complete and verbatim (so there is no case to be made that she was taken out of context or misquoted).
I believe her argument was that they already build planes in Washington, so the infrastucture and training and workforce are already in place, but given she said none of that in answer to the question the reaction has been warranted. I hope she steps forward soon with an apology so we can move on from this and get back once again to things that really matter.
UPDATE: Perhaps, I should also disclose that I have been in the same facilities (including the largest building in the world by volume) where they build these massive planes in Everett, Washington and that may give me a little different perspective on the belief that there’s nothing else like it in the country. (Which certainly doesn’t mean there couldn’t be right here in Alabama)
UPDATE 2: Thanks to Laura Onstot for the mention of my thoughts in her piece on the Seattle Weekly blog.
UPDATE 3: Thanks to Jennifer Foster for the mention in her post on the OAN Political Blog.
UPDATE 4: The follow-up from NPR Reporter Debbie Elliott (with a quote from Bradley Byrne) is also worth a listen:

I’m by far anti- Patty Murray, that being said I dont think she owes a apology for that comment, my guess is folks in Alabama are thin skin- if I read the statement correctly she correctly was saying that Washington should have the advantage because Washington State already has a bunch of Boeing Plants and well train people here- that doesnt mean that Alabama couldnt build plants and train people but it be much cheaper to stay with what you have- I do not know if Alabama is a right to work state like South Carolina is (The state were Boeing is looking at) but the biggest problem I see Washington State has in regards to Boeing that this state is a heavy blue state, and very anti-business- unions are very strong in this state which is a sad thing as I believe they drive up cost- look at the last strike at Boeing- I thought that was a HUGE mistake by the union, here we are in a recession and they go on strike? What kind of crap is that?

Murray should apologize so Shelby can keep fighting to have foreign companies (Airbus) build military equipment off of the tax dollars of those of us who still have a job?
Shelby should resign from the senate, he puts pork for Alabama ahead of our national security, all the while screaming about how he hates pork.
Shelby is a security risk who would sell out his entire country for 150 jobs in his state.
In 2007, Alabama got $1.76 in federal spending for each federal tax dollar it paid in.
In 2007 Washington State got 88 CENTS for every dollar of federal taxes paid.

EVERY RESIDENT OF ALABAMA SHOULD BE APOLOGIZING TO THE PEOPLE OF WASHINGTON STATE FOR STEALING OUR MONEY, BUT TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY THEY THEN TAKE OUR TAX MONEY AND GIVE IT TO AIRBUS WITH STATE TAX BREAKS TO LURE THEM TO BUILD SMALL BITS OF THE PLANE.
