Ron Sparks has announced that tomorrow he will hold a 10am press conference in Huntsville to announce his future intentions. I strongly suspect, given what I have been hearing all day long and the location of the announcement that he will jump into the 5th congressional district race, but the campaign is being very tight-lipped about the decision.
The ripple effects from Parker Griffith’s party switch could magnify, as now some in the Democratic party establishment would be left with no candidate in the race for governor, and may yet scramble one more time to come up with an alternative to Artur Davis (Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom Jr. has most certainly been approached). Barring the unlikely scenario of a last minute candidate, Davis could now have an uncontested primary and be able to focus his resources on the general election, a huge advantage for him as whichever Republican emerges will have taken a significant hit to their campaign coffers during what looks to be a very competitive primary.
UPDATE (12/28 6:29pm CST) The Sparks campaign is, in fact, holding three press conferences in Alabama tomorrow, which as Swing State Project notes, many will view as a sign he is staying in the governor’s race. I suppose we will see who is correct in the morning. If I am able to confirm one way or the other prior to the announcement, you’ll read it here.
