Mitchell Howie Exploring Run in Alabama’s 5th Congressional District

Well, here’s a new approach.  Mitchell Howie, a former judge advocate general in the U.S. Air Force is exploring a run for the U.S. Congress in Alabama’s 5th Congressional District, as a Democrat.  What’s interesting is that he has started a Facebook page and is soliciting input as part of his decision-making process on whether or not to enter the race. You can view his page here.

According to his Linked In public profile, Mr. Howie is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Houston Law Center.  He also served as chief of staff to a member of the Texas House of Representatives and worked for the League of Conservation Voters early in his career.  He served as a JAG in the Air Force from July 2005-September 2009 and now has hung his own shingle and works as a sports agent as well as an attorney.

I certainly support anyone who is willing to use social media to enhance their campaign and solicit input in making decisions.  I wish Mr. Howie well and hope he continues to be an active member of the online community, particularly if he chooses to become a candidate for Congress.

Mitchell Howie sounds like a fine candidate. We sure don’t have anything in the slot now.

    New faces are always nice.

    Esther,

I would be careful with “always”, but it is good to see a new face who seems like a competent candidate.

Before we anoint a “new, fresh face” as the answer to the political process, wouldn’t it be appropriate to review their views, experience, and qualifications for the public office. While the idea of a candidacy sounds “romantic,” the work involved with representing a Congressional district should not be taken lightly and a thorough review of the candidate’s platform and ideas should take place. Mitch, if you’re “in it to win it,” then publish a detailed record of your views, personal and professional, along with previous experience holding a public office. The leap from JAG attorney to US Congress is wide.
