Well…I was most definitely wrong. The Washington Post’s The Fix is reporting Ron Sparks will announce later this morning that he is staying in the Alabama governor’s race. The decision to have multiple press conferences certainly indicated this was the route he was taking, but I still believed it was possible he would make the leap, I was wrong.
As the Fix also reported, it is believed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will now turn its sights on Public Service Commissioner Susan Parker, who I have discussed here previously. Danny at Political Parlor does not think her candidacy is likely. The other names he is hearing are the same ones I am hearing: Steve Raby and Deborah Passeur.
It will be very interesting to see what Sparks says later today about his consideration of the race and why he decided to stay put. I’m interested in your thoughts below (or anonymous tips in the column to the right).
UPDATES
- The AP is reporting he will stay in the race as well.
- Josh Krausshaar at Politico reports,
Sparks had given serious consideration to switching races, but over the weekend he received a lot of pushback from his leading donors who weren’t thrilled with the idea, according to a Democrat familiar with his deliberations.
- The Hill also covered the story.
- And TPMDC chimed in as well.
- Mooncat from Left in Alabama covered the Huntsville press conference and asked Sparks about the Politico story that was written almost entirely based on an interview with his campaign manager which left many of us believing Sparks would run in the 5th. His response,
First of all I haven’t spoke to my campaign manager in about a week. He’s on vacation and he’s not in my office so I don’t know what information he’s been putting out. It hadn’t been put out under my authority.
Really? Wow…so Justin Saia “went rogue” on that story…another interesting wrinkle, and big appreciation to Mooncat for flushing that little nugget out into the open.
