Ron Sparks will Announce He is Staying in Governor’s Race

Well…I was most definitely wrong.  The Washington Post’s The Fix is reporting Ron Sparks will announce later this morning that he is staying in the Alabama governor’s race.  The decision to have multiple press conferences certainly indicated this was the route he was taking, but I still believed it was possible he would make the leap, I was wrong.

As the Fix also reported, it is believed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will now turn its sights on Public Service Commissioner Susan Parker, who I have discussed here previously.  Danny at Political Parlor does not think her candidacy is likely.  The other names he is hearing are the same ones I am hearing: Steve Raby and Deborah Passeur.

It will be very interesting to see what Sparks says later today about his consideration of the race and why he decided to stay put.  I’m interested in your thoughts below (or anonymous tips in the column to the right).

UPDATES

Sparks had given serious consideration to switching races, but over the weekend he received a lot of pushback from his leading donors who weren’t thrilled with the idea, according to a Democrat familiar with his deliberations.

  • The Hill also covered the story.
  • And TPMDC chimed in as well.
  • Mooncat from Left in Alabama covered the Huntsville press conference  and asked Sparks about the Politico story that was written almost entirely based on an interview with his campaign manager which left many of us believing Sparks would run in the 5th.  His response,

First of all I haven’t spoke to my campaign manager in about a week.  He’s on vacation and he’s not in my office so I don’t know what information he’s been putting out.  It hadn’t been put out under my authority.

Really?  Wow…so Justin Saia “went rogue” on that story…another  interesting wrinkle, and big appreciation to Mooncat for flushing that little nugget out into the open.

Your comments and thoughts are appreciated below.

What’s Next for Susan Parker?

Danny at Political Parlor and the AP noted earlier today that Susan Parker is running for another term on the Public Service Commission.  I take any opportunity I can to toot Susan’s horn.  She is one of those rare genuine people in politics.  I supported her in her attempt to become US Senator, and I thought she would have made a better replacement for Bud Cramer than Parker Griffith.  I hope she will make another attempt at higher office in the future, but in the meantime, she continues to be very well-respected, both within the state and outside it (as demonstrated by her election as president of the Southeastern Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners and second VP of the National Association).

Some Alabama Dems Just Keep Going Down the List of Gubernatorial Candidates

Susan Parker is just the latest Alabama Democrat to say she has been asked to run, but will not. Some of my fellow Alabama political watchers can’t believe that there is still an active effort to recruit additional candidates, but I have no doubt that there is. As a former state auditor, Susan may be the last potential candidate who has ever won statewide office (Folsom and Cobb also met that criteria), so now we will be looking at wildcard candidates coming out of the woodwork…state reps or senators…prominent business people. Who knows? But I still have no doubt that the Democratic field isn’t complete and that the candidate that is recruited will have the full support of the Alabama Education Association as an organization and Paul Hubbert and Joe Reed individually.

The only question is who will be the one crazy enough to jump in the fray? Anyone? Anyone?

Susan Parker for Governor? Not in 2010 – Doc’s Political Parlor

AL-05 News

Danny has the latest on the Alabama 5th Congressional District race. I desperately want to see Susan Parker run, but I can understand why she would stay out if Parker Griffith is in, as it appears he is. There will be other opportunities for Susan.
