Looking at the rest of the run-off races, as well as the races for November that are now set, I have updated the Alabama Candidates on Social Media page to reflect those who made it past Tuesday’s outcomes. Please let me know if you are aware of Facebook pages, YouTube or Twitter accounts I missed. You can reach me through the Contact page.

It’s time to revisit how well Alabama candidates are using social media. We looked at the social media landscape at the beginning of March, and one month later things look a little different, with the campaigns picking up steam and some beginning to see how social media can increase the electorate’s awareness of their campaigns.

Yet, while campaigns seem to be fully grasping the “media” component of social media, they still don’t seem to get the “social” part. Interaction is the key to social media, and most campaigns are still treating these tools as yet another outlet to push out their message. I will give credit to the campaigns who agreed to Twitter interviews with Jeff Vreeland (@jvreeland) and to those that have conducted live web chats with the Anniston Star. I hope to see more evidence of interaction between the campaigns and their followers on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in the final weeks of the primary.

Having said that, each campaign has done an admirable job of increasing the number of people they can expose their message to on a daily basis, as evidenced by the increase in Facebook “fans” and Twitter “followers”.

Facebook Fans (In order of percentage increase from the previous month):

Bill Johnson       2368   +79%

Robert Bentley 1560   +60%

Bradley Byrne   6123   +51%

Ron Sparks         1952    +21%

Artur Davis       12855  +13%

Tim James           3546  +10%

Roy Moore         6857   +3%

Twitter Followers (In order of percentage increase from the previous month):

Bradley Byrne                 1373  +25%

Robert Bentley               1016   +14%

Ron Sparks                         520   +11%

Tim James                        1338   +6%

Bill Johnson                    1028    +5%

Artur Davis                     3230    +4%

Roy Moore                      6113     +0.5%

As we have examined before, there are other metrics available to look at how a Twitter account is used, as opposed to a simple count of followers. For consistency, I am continuing to use Twitalyzer as my tool for analysis and it bears out what I have witnessed first hand, the surge of activity from Bentley and the former leaders in social media interactiveness coming back to the pack:

Twitalyzer Rating (by difference from last month)

Robert Bentley   1.1        +0.2

Ron Sparks           0.3        +0.1

Bill Johnson        0.5        +0

Tim James           1.4          -0.1

Bradley Byrne     1.1        -0.5

Artur Davis           2.7      -0.7

Roy Moore           0           -1.5

I am also following all of the candidates You Tube channels and monitoring the interest there as well. None of the channels have a significant number of subscribers but here are the numbers in terms of “views” (as of April 11th)

You Tube Views (by channel)

Artur Davis            14,448

Bradley Byrne       10,812

Roy Moore               9,789

Robert Bentley       4,236

Tim James                3,216

Bill Johnson             2,153

Ron Sparks                   950

What we saw this month is candidates who had been a little behind in the social media wars making up ground, so that Robert Bentley and Bill Johnson are now becoming players in the arena, where they may not have been before. This also comes through in the poll results here at The World Around You. When we asked our readers who was running the best social media campaign right now, we got these (unscientific, but still interesting) results:

Robert Bentley  64% (174 votes)

Bill Johnson        12%  (33 votes)

Artur Davis           8%  (22 votes)

Bradley Byrne     7%  (18 votes)

Tim James            5%  (14 votes)

Roy Moore           3%  (8 votes)

Ron Sparks           2%  (5 votes)

James Potts         0%  (0 votes)

And once again, I would almost completely agree with this as the order for how Alabama gubernatorial candidates have done with social media over the last month (if the percentages are a bit out of whack). I see real effort from the Bentley and Johnson campaigns in engaging with their online supporters. I see Davis, Byrne and James maintaining and increasing their fans and followers. And I see Sparks and Moore bringing up the tail-end of the pack. That may be by design as social media may not be an important part of their communication strategies, but it is certainly what I see. In fact, there was a significant period of the month where we saw very little social media activity from the Sparks campaign, and there hasn’t been much activity at all from Roy Moore up to this point.

So, if we want to call this my “power rankings” for social media, I would put Davis first, followed closely by Byrne, then a hard-charging Robert Bentley, Tim James, Bill Johnson, Ron Sparks and Roy Moore, with the whole list tightening substantially over the last month. I don’t mean for these analyses to say anything about what will or won’t happen from the election standpoint, but it will be interesting to see if it does. Social media is already playing a role in shaping the story line of this election, we have yet to see whether it will play any significant role in the result.

What do you think about the candidates’ use of social media so far? What do you think it means for the 2010 election? Comment below.

So here we are again, scouring the interwebs for the best tweets in Alabama Politics this week. Don’t forget you can follow The World Around You on Twitter for the latest in Alabama politics news and other twitterness. The week got off to a great start with this gem from State Senator Scott Beason, referring to the news that the US Department of Justice and other law enforcement entities were questioning legislators this week about the bingo legislation,

stated on the radio this morning that in Alabama is bingo spelled with an “f” ———FBIngo

State Senator Paul Sanford used his Twitter account to call out Birmingham News reporter Chuck Dean after a story ran about $250,000 Sanford says he was offered by a lobbyist representing gambling interests,

Shame on the B’ham news reporter for taking creative licensing with my words. Close but an inaccurate quote.

And finally, this tweet from the Alabama Politics account, relaying a floor speech by State Representative Alvin Holmes regarding the law to ban salvia (which passed 94-1) gets the coveted “Captain Obvious” award:

Rep. Holmes: There is not a crime in the state of AL that they don’t have a law to convict you for

It was an exciting week in Alabama politics and there is always the possibility that I missed a noteworthy tweet. Please add your nominations in the comments!

We took a week off, but this was the week of breaking news on Twitter. Kay Ivey teased the announcement of her switch to the race for lieutenant governor and tweeted the announcement at the same time her press conference was occurring. We also got breaking news of the party switch of State Senator Jim Preuitt and of the denial by the state GOP Executive Committee for State Senator Harri-Anne Smith to run on the Republican ballot.

But first up on Alabama Politics Tweets of the Week, a shout-out for one of the best lunch spots in Montgomery from the former governor of Florida, Jeb Bush:

Was in Alabama yesterday (lunch at Chappy’s Deli — great reuben). Bradley Byrne would be a great Governor.

Wednesday March 31st was a big day for breaking news on Twitter, more than one major story broke on that day, and the first place I saw any of them reported was on Twitter. First, the Republican nominee in Alabama Congressional District 5 in 2008, Wayne Parker, endorsed Mo Brooks, and Mo let us know just as the official announcement was being made,

Wayne Parker just endorsed Mo Brooks !!

We also had the official announcement of Kay Ivey’s switch from the race for Alabama governor to the race for lieutenant governor, as she let us know on her Twitter account as it was being announced to the media,

It’s official: I just qualified as a Republican candidate for Lt. Governor. The fight for conservative values goes on, in a new arena.

And I’ll leave you with one of the funniest tweets of the week, which was from “Dave Cockfight” discussing the reaction of State Senator and candidate for lieutenant governor Hank Erwin to Kay Ivey entering the race:

@erwin4ltgov2010 seems to be treating @KayIvey candidacy like evolution: Something he doesn’t believe in and as a result ignores#alpolitics

Any tweets I missed that you think were worthy of mention? Please link them below.

And to submit for consideration in next week’s post, please use the SMS tip box in the right sidebar or contact me through the contact page.

Join me tomorrow at a meeting with River Region Dems http://bit.ly/c0wtDv #AL03 #AL3 #montgomery #segall #alabama#congress #al

I’m pretty tuned in to common hashtags for Alabama politics and none of the ones they used in their first two tweets are in common usage. The account finally hit on the most common hashtag: #alpolitics, in it’s third time out.

For the uneducated, hashtags are a way to “flag” a tweet or add it to a category of interest. You can certainly start a hashtag that others may want to use, but if no one else is using it there isn’t much point. I would advise sticking with the #alpolitics tag as that will get to the widest audience of interest.

Next we have Bradley Byrne (@BradleyByrne), who seems to be in a bit of a Twitter rut…he only offered nine tweets this week and these were four of them:

Looking forward to tonight’s fundraiser in Sylacauga.

Looking forward to being on the Leland Whaley radio show in Birmingham at 10:00. 100.5 FM.

Looking forward to campaign stops in north Jefferson County.

Looking forward to our Vestavia fundraiser.

Anyone else notice a pattern? Trying to communicate a message of optimism perhaps…always looking forward?

Sen. Paul Sanford offered some insight into his feelings on the debate over the $1 billion roads bill proposed by Sen. Lowell Barron:

Raid the Trust Road Bill up again. Would not accept any amendments from Conservatives. It is almost like witnessing DC in action.

The bill ended up passing 25-10 and we will move on to Spring Break week in the legislature, but hopefull that will not stop the flow of interesting observations and insights from the Alabama politics universe on Twitter.

Was there something I missed this week? Please post it in the comments and remember you can cut and paste candidates for “Tweets of the Week” in the textbox in the right sidebar here at The World Around You.

UPDATE: Brian from Flashpoint reminded me in the comments below that I left out some of the funniest tweets from the committee hearing on cockfighting legislation by Rep. Phil Williams (via @vote4phil)

2 hour hearing on cockfighting. Just shoot me.

3hours of cockfighting. Now it’s about gambling. Can I make an “electronic cockfighting machine”???

Now it’s about the fights and violent crimes that break out at cockfights. Anyone remember “little Jerry Seinfeld”???

More than 3 birds constitutes “a flock of cocks”.

I also was reminded that Robert Bentley tweeted the following:

Don’t forget to follow Dr. Bentley on Twitter @Bentley2010 http://bit.ly/aWKzwO

For those who are not Twitter proficient, only those who were already following him could see that message. I called this out at the time and was informed by the campaign that the message was “pushed” to Twitter from their Facebook account…but that doesn’t change the fact that it looked odd.

We’re going to try out a new feature here at The World Around You (TWAY). Let’s look at the best tweets from Alabama politicians this week…

We can always count on Attorney General Troy King (@TKtheAG) to give us something memorable

Breakfast with Alabama’s Republican Women – now THAT is the breakfast of champions! I love having the Red Wave in town!

State Senator Hank Erwin (@Erwin4LtGov2010) is another constant source of entertainment

Gambling stalled in Montgomery. They can not get the votes in the Senate. Your prayers are working. Keep it up!

The fact that the Alabama Education Association (@myaea) continues to use a derogatory hashtag REALLY amuses me…I know why they’re using it (to let those who follow that hashtag see it), but it makes the tweets look self-insulting

GOP chair Rep Hubbard tries to kill AEA-endorsed PACT bill that makes AL keep promises to PACT contract holders. #aeafail #alpolitics

This one made the “Congressional Tweets of the Week” too, but still entertaining, from gubernatorial candidate Artur Davis

Honored to receive the endorsement of the famous Gee’s Bend Quilters today. www.quiltsofgeesbend.com http://twitpic.com/14dp50

We also had an interesting new account pop up @Siegelman4Gov98 which began simply reposting messages from Ron Sparks’s account (@RonSparks2010). Obviously playing off the accusations that Ron Sparks campaign platform is simply a retread of Don Siegelman’s in 1998.

I guess my #FF is @RonSparks2010 this guy is on to something good. #alpolitics

As we approach the end of the year, I think it’s a good time to look at how political candidates are doing in terms of their use of and popularity on social media. First, let’s look at a tale of the tape (as of today) on Twitter:

Twitter Followers:

Roy Moore (@Moore2010): 4,384

Artur Davis (@ArturDavis): 2,711

Tim James (@TimJames2010): 1,062

Bradley Byrne (@BradleyByrne): 704

Bill Johnson (@TeamJohnson2010): 551

Robert Bentley (@Bentley2010): 447

Kay Ivey (@KayIvey): 343

Ron Sparks (@RonSparks2010): 302

Wow what a lead for Roy Moore…but I did a little research, using a tool called Twitter Counter I looked at the number of followers daily going back three months. There is a weird anomaly on October 7th where Moore went from 2,589 followers to 4,270 followers overnight! Wow! That’s incredible! And he has almost no growth before that leap or since. Does that seem fishy to anyone else? Would it help if you knew that there are marketing services that will sell you followers? You see more natural growth patterns for all of the other candidates on the list.

While that scorecard may give us some idea of their popularity, it tells us nothing about effective they have been in using the tool to inform and collaborate with supporters. Thankfully there are some applications out there that let us compare that as well. I turned to one called Twitalyzer which looks at the influence a particular user has on the overall landscape and came up with these results:

@ArturDavis: 1.8

@BradleyByrne: 1.4

@TeamJohnson2010: 0.9

@TimJames2010: 0.9

@KayIvey: 0.5

@RonSparks2010: 0.2

@Bentley2010: 0.1

@Moore2010: 0

For comparison purposes yours truly (@TWAY_Kris) pulls a 3.8, Governor Riley (@GovernorRiley) pulls a 1.4, and Attorney General Troy King (@TKtheAG) is a 0.1 on this scale. So while Roy Moore has a huge follower advantage, he’s saying very little to that large following (there’s evidence most of them wouldn’t be listening even if he did), and what he is saying isn’t having any influence across the Twitter universe at large. From my own observations, I believe this Twitalyzer ranking is very close to the way I would rate how well each campaign is using Twitter to spread their message.

I’ll say what I’ve said many times before, social media isn’t about the tools as much as it is about how you use them to connect with real people. None of the campaigns are very effective with the interaction yet, but I see signs that they are trying. I will offer other observations on the use of other tools in the near future.

As always, your comments are welcome below.

Currently the page is only tracking federal and statewide races, but if the interest is there, I may get ambitious enough to begin tracking the state legislative candidates as well. (and a big thanks to the Political Parlor for their Big List 2010 as the source for candidates in these races).

I am always interested in your feedback, please offer your thoughts in the comments below.

Over the past few years, I have become a true believer in the power of social media to enhance the political process. That is why I’m so excited about the workshop I will be attending this morning, hosted by Politics 4 All, the Business Council of Alabama, the Alabama Democratic Party and the Alabama Republican Party (when does that EVER happen), it will feature several outstanding speakers and a lot of attendees who share the same passion I do.

Social media (as experienced through Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, Politics 4 All and other tools) has a lot of power that has yet to be harnessed by political campaigns, especially in Alabama, and you will not find a stronger voice for seeing that change than me. I think these tools should be a part of every campaign as well as a piece of constituent outreach once in office. The lack of commitment to using the tools that are available to make some tasks easier astounds me on a daily basis. Of course, the fear of doing something wrong is paralyzing. I look forward to talking about these issues more in the workshop today.

I’ll be live blogging throughout the day with thoughts and experiences:

5:54am: I was so happy to finally get to meet some people I have gotten to know well over the last year, online, in person last night. I have the greatest respect and admiration for the guys from Politics 4 All and what they are trying to do to bring social media into the political process. I have made a number of good and trusted friends online and it was nice to bring those friendships into the real world last night. It’s always special to be around people who share your passion, and I was definitely amongst people like that last night, can’t wait to see more later this morning.

8:19am: A little more than 30 minutes to showtime…room is filling up fast. Lots of interesting people from diverse backgrounds today, it should be a great workshop.

8:32am: Already chatted with several people I had yet to meet in person, as well as my good friends who I’ve only recently met. You just can’t beat the energy of folks who all have the same interests holed up in the same room for a few hours.

9:00am: Paul Chaney is doing a very good job of laying out the consumer trends that set the table for understanding the importance of social media. It is a very different world we are living in, and it means we have to change HOW we message in politics.

9:08am: Paul used the example of United Breaks Guitars to illustrate the power of social media. And then he hits on the KEY to social media…Authenticity and Transparency. The tools do you NO GOOD if you don’t understand those two words. I agree 100%!

9:53am: And we’re back…my friends Philip Bryan, Communications Director for Alabama GOP, and Lindsay Waits, former Communications Director for the Alabama Democratic Party, are up next…

First, plugged Politics 4 All…and then offered their four I’s:

1. Investment - putting time and energy into understanding these tools.

2. Integration – having a central hub…as Paul Chaney emphasized in his presentation.

3. Interaction – If you’re not following back…and responding, you’re not really using the tools.

4. Issue

I got my plugs from both Philip and Lindsay…we can move on now…

They are also talking about the explosion of Facebook across ages, and what social media can’t do yet, which is raise a lot of money.

3:22pm: Okay, so my laptop battery and Twitter died almost simultaneously, which is unfortunate. So let me try and sum up my thoughts from the day:

Not a lot of new information for me, but a lot more confirmation about what I have been saying for some time now. If you’re a political candidate or association and you are without a social media strategy, you have a serious problem. It may not come to bite you this political cycle, but you will be well behind the curve if you don’t start thinking about it now. And the absolute number one thing anyone needs to know when starting to develop a social media strategy is that the emphasis is on the SOCIAL. It’s about developing relationships, if you’re just on these sites because you feel like you have to be, there needs to be some serious re-evaluation.

I also had confirmed for me the value of these relationships as they translate into real world settings and the bonds that can form, even between people with varying political views. I continue to have confirmed to me that the right people, brought together in the right way can solve a lot of problems, but for the machinations and antics of the few. Every time I’m around my fellow politicos (of all political backgrounds) I can feel the energy and passion, but it comes out in a way that is not partisan and shows that there is always hope that the next generation will be able to do things differently.

I thank the folks from Politics 4 All, the Business Council of Alabama, the Alabama Republican Party and the Alabama Democratic Party for coming together to put this outstanding workshop. I hope the message goes out far and wide about what the online world already means to politics in Alabama and across the country, but also what it can mean in the future and how social media lets us each play a role in that. Additional thanks to Paul Chaney (@pchaney on Twitter), Philip Bryan (@philipalgop), Lindsay Waits (@lindsaywaits), Rep. (soon to be State Senator) Cam Ward (@repcamward) and Jenci Spradlin (@jenciTN) for an outstanding job presenting and hope we get to do something similar again soon.

I have made some adjustments in my activity here, based on a significantly increased level of activity on Twitter. One of the great benefits of Twitter is being able to interact and meet people you never would have been able to connect with otherwise.

One of those interactions has resulted in a new opportunity for my wife and I. I have become friends with one of the minds behind a new website called MedicalMommas.com. It’s an idea hatched by two medical journalists (one from the print world and one from television) to be a site that is a hybrid of WebMD and Facebook, a social network where women can get accurate medical information and exchange ideas. Obviously, the site was created as a site by and for women, but I have been able to angle my way in as someone with some expertise to offer.

My wife and I are currently moderating the “Blended Families” group and hope to move into other areas in the future. I encourage all of my female readers to come check the site out. It is currently in beta form, with a scheduled debut of September 1st. I hope to see you there!

I applaud people like Sen. Chuck Grassley and Sen. Claire McCaskill for their use of the technology to be more in touch with their constituents.

You may have noticed my new Twitter widget out to the right. After much fidgeting and playing I finally got the hang of Twitter and can see the usefulness in expanding the audience for this blog, as well as contributing to the overall political discourse. I encourage Alabama politicians who want to have more interaction with the online community and their constituents overall to check it out.

My Twitter feed can link you into other feeds you might be interested in by looking at my followers. I had a particularly salient experience with the technology yesterday and my friend, the mayor of Prattville, Jim Byard Jr. The mayor has just recently adopted the technology as well, but he is doing very well with it. Yesterday he got a robocall about the garbage tax increases in his city that was full of falsehoods, he was able to write about it on Twitter and direct people to the facts on the city’s website. I also saw US Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri answering questions from constituents in her Twitter feed yesterday (including one confirming that she herself does the writing and reads all the replies).
